Are the 90’s coming back already?

I do believe so!  Not only is more vibey R&B surfacing, I am also seeing trends of the 90’s fashion and hair styling returning.  Remember baby hair gelled to the scalp in little swirls and dark lipstick?! Takes me back to Nia Long and Love Jones the movie.  Confession…I kind of LOVE to dance and sing 90’s music…really though..like a lot.

CHECK OUT THIS FASHION.  90’s with a twist!

The album, the album!  My first solo album is still in the works and I am still brainstorming an album name as well.  In the meantime, love to stay inspired by checking out fashion, culture, indie music.  I’m really feeling Solange’s Saint Heron collaborative music release under her new label Saint Records.  Read more about Solange’s label in Billboard’s Exclusive Interview.

Great music on the horizon.  Stay tuned by joining the mailing list here.

Love it, or hate it? The Irony of Beyonce’s Album Release + Rolling Stone Tests R. Kelly

Danielle W Carter at The Boys & Girls Club Charity Art Event, Santa Monica

Have a great weekend!

Do you love it, or hate it?  Hot topics…

  • NBC’s Californians  A blast from the past for a little chuckle!  Ever had a conversation about traffic in the Los Angeles?  CLICK HERE for a “knee slapper.”
  • Beyonce’s album release is all the rage because she DID NOT promote it.  She let everyone else do the talking starting at 12AM on Friday the 13th.  As a major artist not promoting your album is a big deal!
  • The irony is that indie artists have been dropping albums with no promotion for decades with no comparable press reaction.  As an emerging artist, is it possible to top that release?  It has yet to be seen but we can focus on making quality music and letting it go viral online.
  • “What If You Don’t Like Beyonce’s Album?”  Basically,  you’ll be hooked once you watch the videos and take a second listen.  The buzz and sales growth of this album is undeniable, especially in this evolving music climate.
  • R. Kelly sings about dolphins and sub sandwiches on the spot in this Rolling Stone interview Improvises “Sex Dolphin,” “Italian Hero Sandwich of Love” Parental Discretion Advised
  • There are some things in life that you just can’t take too seriously.  At the end of the day, life should be fun!  Love the process.  R. Kelly (no matter how you feel about him today) finds the fun in improvising.  He is given four random topics to write about on the spot.  A reminder that there are no rules.

As many of you know, we are in the studio making the first studio album!  So grateful to everyone who joined VIP thus far to support and help make this happen!  We are uncovering a unique fusion of sound for the Dani W Project, including Funk Rock, Hip Pop, and more.  Excited to share this project with you!

Was lunch free? Year-End Music Tax Tips for the Self-Employed & Musicians

http://www.daniellewcarter.comWhat’s music to your ears around tax season?  Hmm….the nerd in me likes to know the benefits of deductions.  Isn’t this everyone’s idea of weekend fun?…

Enjoy these tips for educational purposes!

The below was provided by the helpful customer service team at Sweetwater.  I am not affiliated with the company, nor am I a  tax advisor, so please refer to www.irs.gov and your tax and legal professionals for advice.

The first article speaks directly to musicians and briefly explains travel, meal, vehicle, and equipment expenses (for both gigging and studio musicians), and whether or not you can deduct them on your taxes. http://www.artstaxinfo.com/musicians.shtml

Here is a “nuts and bolts” explanation of Section 179 (first-year depreciation allowance for equipment) and how to take advantage of it. http://www.section179.org/

The last article features a list of common deductible business expenses. This can be helpful if you are considered self-employed or if you own your own studio. http://www.musicbizacademy.com/knab/articles/taxtips.htm

The Sweetwater company is not comprised of legal experts or tax advisors, so you should definitely discuss these issues with your own professional tax advisor.  Each individual’s situation is different, and these links are for informational purposes only.

Today’s Biggest Challenge

By: Danielle W. Carter

All eyes were on CEO of Lyric Financial, Eli Ball as he spoke at the Billboard Film, TV and Music Conference 2013.  The panel was titled, “What’s Happening to Investment In Music for Other Media?”

“Five percent of the industry is making 95% of the money.”

Specialty financial companies like Lyric Financial are developing programs to meet the income needs for the 95%.

One of these product solutions includes royalty advances for music professionals and labels.  Lyric explains, “[A royalty advance] is a cash advance on a royalty earning pipeline that has not yet been paid.  You can draw cash immediately for royalties that have not yet been paid by ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, your publisher, or your label. This type of funding is available to all songwriters, producers, and publishers who will earn at least $5,000 in royalties during the next year.”

With the growth of financial companies, staffed by former music executives who understand the sporadic revenue streams of entertainment professionals, there is an opportunity to leverage music catalogs and other assets, thereby implementing more creative financing options.

Lyric Financial posted an interview with Business Manager Johnathan Schwartz who said, “I think the biggest challenge is that today’s earning potential is not as great as a decade ago…artists today are generating more revenue from touring and other opportunities like sponsorship, endorsements, or taking equity positions in companies.  But those opportunities are really only available if you’re an A-list artist.”

Emerging artists, songwriters, and other music professionals continue to trail-blaze in the industry, standing behind music they believe in, which often means heavily investing in their craft and business upfront.  Once widely available, the practice of utilizing alternative funding options may become a favorable way going forward to sustain a career in the music industry.

Let us know your comments!  Would you consider using a financing program?  Do you think artists can continue to rely on crowd funding campaigns?

Bruno Mars & The Biggest funnel in the world…

IMAGINE the biggest funnel in the world holding the top talent. They are floating around. Down at the bottom of the funnel are four drops (four songs that get to go on the radio). What are you going to do to be better than Dr. Luke, Benny Blanco, Dr. Dre and Diane Warren? It is that competitive! Keep the bar high for yourself and stay focused on the creative purpose. The bar is set HIGH!

More key takeaways from the interview with publisher and producer, Steve Lindsey, who took a chance on a young man with a dream. Five years later, we now know that young man as Bruno Mars.

20131007-215939.jpg

  • Speaking to a room full of passionate songwriters at The Songwriting School of Los Angeles, Steve tells it like it is. The music business is all about the radio right now if you want to make some sustained income. That might change, but today it’s the biggest funnel.
  • The purpose of songwriting is to make people feel like they’re not alone. It’s not about your diary.
  • Storytelling is key. Know who is singing to who, where, when and why?
  • There are two types of songs: the Fertility dance (any love song) and the War Chant (different rhythm, gets males riled up so they can conquer the other tribe over the hill).
  • Initially, Steve heard a song of Bruno Mars (before he was Billboard charting Bruno Mars) and thought he was “wack.” Steve was interested in the second kid (Neyo) who was singing in the background and wrote the demo song. In an attempt to get Neyo signed, he signed Bruno and got “stuck” developing him. The rest is history…both Neyo and Bruno eventually became A-list artists.
  • Bruno Mars wanted to do an old school retro thing. Steve advised, “You can do that. But make sure the lyrics, the language is of today’s times.”
  • Making music is like making a film. You need: 1) A great script: a great song, 2) A great director: a great producer, knows how to bring the song to life with all moving parts, and 3) Movie star: your artist, singer. You don’t need a great track to make a great record. It’s just a part of the movie.
  • Solo your vocal. If it’s not a hit with just the vocal, it’s not a hit. Get the song right!
  • Everyday I handwrite a card and send a thank you note for every meeting that I take. It’s touching, personal and differentiating. It’s opened doors.
  • Steve will be continuing the conversation with his first class @SongSchool starting Monday, October 14 at 7:30PM.

Everyone needs a little helping hand! Set your compass and stay focused.

A daily dose of inspiration to fuel every big ‘old dreamer!

Love,

Dani W

ASCAP “I CREATE MUSIC” EXPO 2013:  Behind the Curtains

Were you at the ASCAP “I Create Music” Expo this year?  One-on-one listening and feedback sessions with industry executives, peer-to-peer networking, awareness of imperative regulatory lobbying on Capitol Hill and a solid lineup of acclaimed panelists made for an informative and eventful conference.  If you missed it, you can still purchase the online access to the recorded panels through the ASCAP website.

During the Expo, we heard from accomplished A&R executives such as Tina Davis, who discovered Chris Brown, as well as from artists and producers like Stargate, Ne-yo, Katy Perry, Jill Scott and Big Sean.  Some panelists who represented major international publishers even provided their contact information and were seeking song submissions.  Award winning international songwriters graced the panels to recount golden nuggets from their respective career paths.

An overarching theme of advice was to stay focused no matter what; keep developing your authenticity as a writer, artist, producer, or musician so that your songs stand alone and speak for themselves.  As you do so, the dots will continue to connect and shape your career path as you remain open to opportunities and fine tune your instincts.  Each milestone you reach prepares you for the next.

Many attendees enjoyed the interactive co-writing session hosted by artist/songwriter Priscilla Renea, whom ASCAP reported:  wowed last year’s EXPO by performing some of her biggest songs at the closing Writers Jam: “California King Bed” (Rihanna), “Who Says” (Selena Gomez) and “Love Spent” (Madonna).

During Priscilla’s session, attending songwriters gathered in a large conference room and were placed into separate writing teams.  Each group was given the same instrumental track and a limited amount of time to write the best verse possible.  When the writing time ended, each team had the opportunity to present their melody and lyrics on stage.

Priscilla selected the best two verses in the room and recorded them live.  At the end of the session, the entire room listened proudly to the freshly recorded song.  ASCAP has found this to be a way to engage their attendees and to enrich their experiences.  Going forward, this could be an opportunity to not only add value for attendees, but also to leverage their talent through more interactive workshops.

A special feature of the Expo is the final Songwriter’s showcase called “The Writers Jam”.  This year, talent included Stacy Barthe, Brandy Clark, Brett James, and Tom Higgenson from Plain White T’s.  Each artist/songwriter delivered compelling songs one-by-one, in the round, Nashville style.

One showcase favorite at “The Writers Jam” was Brandy Clark, whose descriptive Country lyrics moved many dry eyes to tears.  She gave very little introduction to her songs, demonstrating the principle of “Show, Don’t Tell.”  Overall, the talented lineup of songwriters shared the power of great songs, reminding us why we love what we do.
